Insadong: The Artistic Hub of Seoul
I nsadong is the Jongno-gu district's most culturally vibrant neighborhood. A perennial favorite with tourists, Insadong is home to hundreds of craft shops, art galleries, tea shops, street vendors, and cafes. You could easily spend a full day exploring the neighborhood and its diverse offerings.
Insadong's Rich Past as a Residential and Artistic Center
Insadong used to be an area of residence for government officials, as well as a popular place of study for painters. However, during the Korean War, it became a hub for trading antiques, which were sold en masse by wealthy Koreans who were forced to leave their homes.
A Place for Traditional Crafts, Tea Shops, and More
Today, Insadong is where tourists go to marvel at traditional Korean crafts and perhaps pick up a few to take home. You'll find everything from paper goods and clothing to ceramics and antiques. Some of the wares for sale are quite expensive, but even those looking for a low cost souvenir are sure to find something in the neighborhood's many shops.
How to Get There from Your Hotel or Vacation Rental in Seoul
Take the subway to Exit 6 at Anguk Station (Seoul Subway Line 3), or Exit 3 at Jonggak Station. From Anguk Station, simply walk 100 yards and turn left. The walk from Jonggak Station is a bit longer—you'll need to walk 300 yards to the four-way intersection, turn left, walk another 100 yards, and then take the left road toward Insadong-gil Road.
